This weekend (April 19) marks five years since the tragic passing of Keith “Guru” Elam. A founding member of Gang Starr, Guru is a Boston, Massachusetts-born MC known for his street-smart rhymes, raspy voice, and 20-plus-year quest to stylishly merge Hip-Hop with Jazz.
In honor of Guru and the sad death anniversary, another Boston MC, Avrex takes a lesser heard Guru track, and re-edits it with the late icon’s family’s blessing. Big Shug, an early Gang Starr member and longtime collaborator with Guru and DJ Premier, also joins Avrex for “Propaganda.” The song is produced by DJ Lord Ron, who was friends with Guru, and originally laced the low-key 2000s-era track which the MC recorded before his 2010 death. – Via Ambrosia For Heads

MTTV: Hey J. Littles, let everyone know where you are from and how you got started as an emcee.
JL: I’m from Hudson County in new Jersey, I reside in North Bergen to be exact and I got started as as emcee in 4th grade by writing poems to girls as a way to run game. I noticed I had a gift with rhymes and started trying to write raps after studying and listening to different rhyme patterns from Big Pun and Big L then tailoring my own style and delivery.
MTTV: When did you know this is the career path you wanted and who were some of your main influences?
MTTV: Hey Dev11n, for those unfamiliar let the world know who you are and what you do.
Dev: My name is dev11n and I’m an artist and a songwriter. I never like to call myself a singer or rapper because even though those are things that I do, I feel like those titles come with a lot of stereotypes that are kind of limiting for what I’m hoping to accomplish with music. I also go by AC Matriarch when working within a collective called Always Cool Society.
